It feels so nice to be standing in a brand new year and on the other side of another busy holiday season for Sea+Stone. This past year was our second holiday season as a small retail business. For many, the holidays are a time for relaxing, spending time with family, and entertaining guests at home. But when you work in retail, over 50% of your sales can occur in just two months out of the year: November & December. We stayed busy with trunk shows every weekend leading up to Christmas, and all spare time was spent making, pricing, packaging, and shipping jewelry orders. It was exhausting... but also very rewarding! If you shopped with us this holiday season or stopped by one of our shows to say hello- I just can't thank you enough for the support!
After the retail rush, I was able to spend Christmas with my fiancé and his family in North Carolina, then got to ring in the new year on the beautiful island of Kauai with my family (more on that trip in another post)! Since returning, life has stayed busy. I have a wedding to plan- my fiancé and I will be tying the knot in my hometown, Tallahassee, FL, on April 29th! This means that some big personal and professional changes are on the horizon.
I started my business to break the confines of my corporate career. I wanted my work to be both flexible and portable. I wanted to set my own hours and be able to schedule life around my work (No more begging for time off to go to a doctors appointment, to meet a repairman at the home, or to pick up a package at the post office). I also wanted the freedom of being able to take my work with me. My work requires travel for trunk shows, retailer scouting trips, trade shows, and restock meetings. But I also love to travel for leisure and inspiration seeking- particularly back to the Gulf Coast where I grew up. It's nice knowing that I can stay caught up with work by taking it with me everywhere I go.
I didn't, however, have any clue justhow important words like "flexible" and "portable" would end up being when I first started my business. You see, in addition to "entrepreneur", I will have the new role of "military spouse" to acquaint myself with this April. I've always wanted to have my own business, and now more than ever I'm so grateful for choosing this path. I knew when I met Jay that I had stumbled upon a gem! I also knew that our life together would entail more frequent relocations and times of having to carry household responsibilities by myself while he's away. I'm so thrilled that I structured Sea+Stone in a way that I can continue to follow my passions and take my business with me into this next chapter!
That being said, the first big change of the new year is already underway! I am selling my home and studio in Charleston so that I can join my fiancé in Southern Pines, NC. I can't wait to tell you more about the area that I will be moving to. Please pardon me for being a bit slow to respond to emails and for being more quiet on social media than usual. I'm trying to complete the move as efficiently as possible so that Sea+Stone can resume business as usual! Next week I will be listing our new phone number and mailing address- so be on the lookout for that! Stay tuned to see progress on our studio relocation, and mark your calendars: our first trunk show of the year is coming up at Firefly in Thomasville, GA on February 11th (start dropping those not-so-subtle hints to your sweethearts!).
