35 Years: The Coral Anniversary

I recently had the pleasure of making a sweet customer a 35th Anniversary gift. The traditional gift for 35 years of marriage is coral! I love this gifting tradition. I always enjoy a good theme to work with- it narrows down the possibilities but still allows room for creativity!

The Traditional Anniversary gifts are as follows:

1st: Paper
2nd: Cotton
3rd: Leather
4th: Fruit & Flowers, or Linen & Silk
5th: Wood
6th: Iron / Candy
7th: Wool/ Copper
8th: Bronze
9th: Pottery
10th: Tin/ Aluminum
11th: Steel
12th: Silk
13th: Lace
14th: Ivory
15th: Crystal
20th: China
25th: Silver
30th: Pearl
35th: Coral
40th: Ruby
45th: Sapphire
50th: Gold
55th: Emerald
60th: Diamond

As you may notice- the traditional list has a theme for the first 15 years, then it switches to every 5 years after that. The practice of traditional anniversary gifts dates all the way back to central Europe during the middle ages!

The piece I created to commemorate 35 years together was crafted with hand-knotted coral heshi beads and a lovely antler found on the couple's farm. The whitetail deer antler had a lovely corkscrewing form- truly a one-of-a-kind treasure!

The neat thing about coral commemorating 35 years together is that coral structures are formed by a myriad of individual teensy polyps. All these small polyps working together is what gives the coral strength and beauty- much like how all the little moments, memories, hardships, and triumphs over the years fill a marriage with the strength, respect, love, and care that it takes to reach 35 years together.

So happy to have been able to create a special, wearable piece for the occasion <3
